Session 0: What's old about this country anyway?

Aaro Lappalainen 18 Oct 2026

Just a bunch of kids! We start our adventure as Wülff, Dash, Tanny, Gigi and Essie, around 9-12 years old and fae as fudge. Children of the village, deep in the untouched wilds and far from any civilized folk, become official adults and receive their true names a cohort at a time, pretty much when their parents deem them fit to take the trial and receive their true name. Before and after receiving these mysterious names of power - secret to none but the self and life partner(s) - people are named after metaphorical circumstances of their birth or events surrounding them:

Wülff - silent wolf dancing; taller than most elves, ashamed of his oddly long ears
Snare - Little snare, youngest of the bunch, a wiry and nervous little goblin
Tanny - Tandoori elegance; a timid but artsy firbolg, plays the bagpipes, lives further from the village with just his dad
Gigi - Giggles at the night; firbolg, fisty, flighty
Essie (S.S.) - Sprigg Sprogg; firbolg (probably?), found in the woods, serious flaky and crusty, almost woody skin conditions, aloof to the point of vacancy, odd kid who likes his own space

On the night before their cryptic trial of naming, the kids sleep in the village school house. As is expected, some of them have a hard time sleeping away from their parents. Essie wanders off to the yard to talk to his best friend, the moon, the silence lulling him to sleep.

In the morning, they face the trial.
